We have moved...and my blog posts are WAY overdue. I have quite a few pictures to add from before we left ND, so expect some out of order posts in the next couple of days. Anyway, some of you are probably wondering how our move to the city of Ann Arbor went...pretty well.
Dane's parents drove most of our stuff in a trailer and pickup, my dad loaded his small SUV to the brim driving by himself, and Dane followed my mom, Eben, and me on our way to MI. So it took 4 cars and 7 people to make this move successful and I honestly do not know what we would have done without them! Dane's parents stayed a couple of nights in Ann Arbor, helping us with odds and ends and enjoying some time in our new city. My parents stayed 6 nights. My dad found many projects in our home and was Dane's homeowner teacher the entire time. My mom's specialty is gardening, so she planted bushes and plants that are very easy to take care of (I am not much of a gardener, but wanted something out there!) We can never thank our parents enough for all that they have done for us, not only during the move, but throughout our lives. We are very fortunate. Many tears were shed when we had to finally say goodbye to them.
The 14 hour drive with Eben in the back seat (my mom as back seat entertainer and feeder) went better than expected. Eben had a few fits, unfortunately one started as we began our way through the center of Chicago...so in a panic outside of Chicago, I stopped in Gary, Indiana...and not the good part of town...it was the part of town that had bars on all windows and nowhere in site was a safe place to simply change Eben's diaper...Dane was not impressed with my quick decision to exit there.
We have moved into our new home. This home has been completely remodeled (floors, windows, walls, hardware, appliances...literally everything above the basement)...this is due to the previous owner burning the place up (she was a hoarder and an elderly woman who has dementia). You would think that a home that has been redone would have few things to worry about when you move in...wrong. She took such poor care of this home that the air conditioner broke within hours of moving in (thank you home warranty), the gas line that runs the dryer was not functional (so $400 later for plumbing work and now we have a working dryer), one of our phone jacks for internet is busted, and the landscaping of our home is nonexistent and destroyed. On top of that, the remodeling that was done was done so cheap that some things have already broke. We have also run into issues with many of the things we have bought, bringing us back to the stores to replace things. We have been running around like crazy, working with repair and service men, and trying to find a cheaper way to have someone else paint our walls so Dane and I don't kill each other trying to do it ourselves. (Our walls are all white and I hate white walls).
Don't get me wrong, we really like our home and with a lot of money and some hard work, we will have a fantastic home to sell in a few years when we move back to ND. We have barely found time to breathe since last Friday...we hope to find time to go swimming in the pool that our housing community has either tomorrow or Friday. Also, once we get everything put together and painted, I will post pics of our new home :)
Yeah, there are no nice parts of Gary. Hope your house comes together soon and you guys can start to enjoy it!!
